Realtree.com editorial director and turkey hunting editor Steve Hickoff was born and raised in north-central Pennsylvania's upper Appalachia region. It's there he first hunted at the legal age of 12, chasing everything from woodcock to wild turkeys. Before that, he plinked tin cans with his BB gun and fished for native brook trout.
Hickoff holds several college writing degrees from Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania (B.S.; no joke), and the University of New Hampshire (M.A.). His byline has appeared in most major sporting print and online publications over the past 25 years, including Outdoor Life, Field & Stream, Gray's Sporting Journal, Turkey & Turkey Hunting, Turkey Call and Turkey Country, among others.
He's also held the varied editorial titles of Sunday newspaper outdoor columnist, book author and contributor, copy editor, news-release writer, catalog product-description producer, magazine editor, web-content creator, TV screenwriter, photographer, videographer, social-media strategist – and probably a few he's forgotten. He's even taught writing seminars on the university and college level, proving even educated hillbillies (who also love to hunt wild turkeys) can contribute to higher education.
These days Hickoff makes his home in Maine where he lives in a log cabin with his wife and English setter. When not writing and editing posts for Realtree.com, he chases spring gobblers and fall turkey flocks around the country.
